Take a New Picture

We have had some wonderful guests in the past couple of weeks. I hosted people who came for all sorts of reasons. The main thread was to celebrate something. Be it an anniversary, birthday or just a get-away.

Most guests arrive a bit guarded – not knowing what to expect here. They are cordial and yet a bit standoffish. I show them to their room and then they are out of sight. Some come back down and socialize a bit but most are here to explore St. Louis or just have some time alone.

Breakfast time is a whole different animal! They come down refreshed. They have slept well and are relaxed. Conversation during breakfast time is always interesting and engaging. There is so much to learn about people. Everyone has a story. Personal details roll out quite easy over a cup of coffee! I love that part of my job.

Some guests leave bigger footprints than others. Some tug at my heart and cause me to pause for thought as they check out and leave. I encountered a few people in the past couple of weeks that stirred my soul. One couple battling an illness that seemed so scary and yet they were handling it together and with such grace. They had been married a long time and was obvious that they were still very much in love.

The other couple was celebrating their 10 year anniversary. After chatting with them, I could see their longing for some "alone time," away from their work and small children. Both couples were here to “take a new picture.”

As someone who has been with the same partner for 42 years, I clearly understand the notion of “taking a new picture.” From experience, I know that we have taken lots of new pictures of each throughout the years. It’s essential in order to maintain a long lasting authentic love for someone. Especially during times of taking care of an ill partner or when you’re in the thick of child raising and you're exhausted most of the time.

Carly Simon wrote it so well in her song entitled The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

Take a look around now Change the direction Adjust the tuning Try a new translation Don't look at your man in the same old way Take a new picture Just because you don't see shooting stars Doesn't mean it isn't perfect Can't you see...

It's the stuff that dreams are made of It's the slow and steady fire It's the stuff that dreams are made of It's your heart and soul's desire It's the stuff that dreams are made of

And you feel closed in by the same four walls The same old conversation With the same old guy you've know for years But use your imagination And you will see....

It's the stuff that dreams are made of It's the slow and steady fire It's the stuff that dreams are made of It's your heart and soul's desire It's the stuff that dreams are made of

What if the Prince on the horse in your fairytale Is right here in disguise And what if the stars you've been reaching so high for Are shining in his eyes

Don't look at yourself in the same old way Take another picture Shoot the stars off in your own backyard Don't look any further And you will see It's the stuff that dreams are made of....

It really is quite simple to take a new picture. I see that with couples who cross our threshold. I am so grateful to have the unique position of helping people young and old rekindle those relationships. If people leave happy and relaxed then I have done my job. So far, I think we have a great track record. We have passed our half-year mark of hosting guests here at Clifton Heights Inn and look forward to many more “picture taking” lovebirds!
